Afternoon Tea in Jerusalem Blog

In addition to my work as a business coach, one of my interests is blogging about life in Israel. This is a country full of contrasts – over eight million citizens living in an area the size of Wales. You can see snow and the lowest place on the globe in the same day. Although surrounded by geopolitical extremes, Israel has achieved a decade of high economic growth. My work brings me in contact with an array of new companies, exciting technologies and dynamic characters. Sitting back with a relaxing cup of strong tea (with milk), you realise just how much there is to appreciate in the Holyland. Large or small operations, private sector or non profit, my clients provide experiences from which others can learn and benefit.

If it quacks like a duck, then what is it?

Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu at the UN – speaking about Iran

It is now a decade since Bibi Netanyahu spoke at the UN, demanding of the world not to blind to the nuclear aspirations of the Iranian leadership. Everything points to the Islamic leadership seeking a dangerous military edge that would threaten regional, if not world peace.

Wake up, shouted Bibi to 200 countries, and the Israeli position has proved to be the correct one over time.

And today, as we look at the emergence of Israel’s 37th government, what kind of quack do we now hear?

There are deep concerns that of the 64 coalition supporters in the Kenesset (Parliament), at least 32 are hell-bent set towards implementing a conservative agenda. This may include discrimination against the LGBT community, severely undermining the independence of the judicial system, and a witch hunt of journalists.

When talking with the foreign press in English, Netanyahu has denied these and other issues. But there has been little such comment in Hebrew. Kenesset members from his own party can be heard via their defeaning silence.

So who is quacking?

Industry officials nationwide (in the tourism industry) have publicly come out against discriminatory legislative proposals floated by incoming coalition partners, who are promoting a bill that would allow businesses to refuse services to customers if it contradicts their religious beliefs.

Several Israeli companies have taken a stance against the impending amendment to Israel’s law on discrimination. Israel Discount Bank, cloud security company Wiz, and More Provident Funds and Pensions have announced that they will not deal with businesses that discriminate against customers.

78 former senior judges have written a letter of warning.

Did I mention the private meeting that Netanyahu was asked to have with initially The President and then The Chief of Staff?

And they all said the same thing: NO!

No, no, no quacked all of these educated experts, of different backgrounds and religious beliefs.

So the question remains: Is Netanyahu prepared to be honest and transparent with the country, explaining why he is insisting on revoking his duck policy?

There again, those are qualities or characteristics are usually to be found in courtrooms, a place the Prime Minister designate tries to avoid over the past few years.
